Groundbreaking findings for the health of bees: Javier Hernández López, Ulrike Riessberger-Gallé and Wolfgang Schühly have discovered a substance against American foulbrood. American and European foulbrood are devastating diseases of the honey bee that occur worldwide and are caused by various gram-positive bacteria. Epidemic-like outbreaks cause immense economic damage worldwide in the honey industry and in food production due to the pollination capacity of bees. Preventive treatment in Europe is limited to hygienic measures, colonies with clinical symptoms are culled on official regulation. In North America and other regions of the world, however, antibiotics are used preventively, leading to colony exposure, honey residues and bacterial resistance. Wolfgang Schühly and his team have developed an antibiotic-free foulbrood treatment which has been patented by the University of Graz. In the Fellowship project, this will be developed to market maturity and the practical suitability, as well as effectiveness of the method under real conditions demonstrated. The aim is to establish a company for the production and distribution of wax honeycombs which can be used against foulbrood diseases.
